Officially in Portuguese, the city is called Manaus, and is the capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas. It lies at the mouth of the Negro River in the Amazon. Between 1870 and 1910, the city became famous for the rubber boom, as the region was the only rubber supplier for a long time to the rest of the world. Today, the place is known mainly for its historic buildings and the Amazonas Theater (Our Reference), and as a tourist starting point for excursions through the very diverse jungle that surrounds the city.

Manaus is located at an altitude of 92m on the left east bank of the Negro River, about eleven kilometers west of the confluence with the Solimões River in the upper Amazon basin, in the middle of the jungle. From then on, the Solimões River is called the Amazon again, just like before the Brazilian border. There are about 1,700 kilometers along the Amazon and 1,500 kilometers, until the mouth of the Amazon in the Atlantic Ocean in Belém Pará.

There are numerous small towns in the area, which include: Careiro Castanho, Manacapuru and Manaquiri, Iranduba, etc., Careiro da Várzea, Itacoatiara, Novo Airão, Presidente Figueiredo and Rio Preto da Eva, however, were incorporated on May 23 2007 by the Manaus Metropolitan Region project and are now part of the city.

8. Climate

Due to the proximity of the equator (3*south latitude) there are only two seasons in the year. Therefore instead of four seasons only the summer and winter seasons are differentiated. The climate is humid and tropical which means it is hot all year round and the air is very humid.

During the rainy season from December to May, heavy rains fall almost daily. Annual rainfall is 2,272 mm. Average temperatures for individual months of the year vary only

slightly between 26 c and 28 c. Maximum daily temperatures are generally between 30 and 40 c from June to the end of September.

Public transportation

There are no trains or trams, public transport only consists of several bus routes. Currently these road lines are not planned. You get on the bus through the back door and get out the front. There is a turnstile between the two doors where the cashier sits. He collects the fair, which is the same per trip regardless of the distance travelled. There is also the option to purchase tickets in

advance and return them to the cashier instead of cash. An electronic  buss access system is planned for the future.

Long-distance rail and road transport

In addition to the roads to the smaller neighbouring cities, there is online road connection that leads to Venezuela via Boa Vista, the capital of the neighbouring state of Roraima. This road BR-174, is the only land connection from Brazil to Venezuela. Manaus can only be reached by boat or plane. There are regular ship connections throughout the Amazon to the cities of Parintins,

Santarem and Belem for example.

Rodway the pier of the port, as our port is called, are 300 meters long and were built between 1900 and 1902 by English engineers from B. Rymkiewicz & Comp. Construction.
